Workers Memorial Day recognizes those workers who died or sustained work related injuries or illnesses. In the United States 14 US Workers loose their life while on the job.
This year President Obama became the first president to issue a presidential proclamation in honor of Worker’s Memorial Day.
Here is part of what President Obama had to say which brings to the point what this day is set for and to realize that we as a nation have so much more to do to keep workers safe while on the job.
From President Obama:
“This year marks the 40th anniversary of both the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, which promise American workers the right to a safe workplace and require employers to provide safe conditions. Yet, today, we remain too far from fulfilling that promise. On Workers Memorial Day, we remember all those who have died, been injured or become sick on the job, and we renew our commitment to ensure the safety of American workers.”
