A recent study was conducted between the US Dept. of Agriculture and the Dept. of Transportation in looking at the best way to transport time sensitive products. In this study they found that the use of trucks to transport such products is the most effective, versus using such transportation methods as boat or railways which are an added cost and passed on to the consumer. While this study looked at the agriculture sector and transporting time sensitive perishable goods, they did raise awareness to another issue.
This bigger issue is the state of our nation’s infrastructure of our roads. From a 2004 report ‘over half of federal aid highways are in less than good condition and more than a quarter of the nation’s bridges are structurally deficient or functionally obsolete.’ It seems that there should be more emphasis in Congress to fix our nation’s roads so that we can continue to safely transport products to their destinations.
